Mark Miller Subaru Expedition

Utah to California | Subaru Outback Wilderness (2022)

Overview

In 2022, Novais Studios partnered with Mark Miller Subaru to showcase the freedom and capability of the 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness through a real-world expedition across some of the American West's most iconic landscapes.

Rather than filming in controlled environments, we spent 11 days on the road, relying entirely on a rental vehicle from Mark Miller Subaru's rental department to document what an authentic adventure looks like.

Our goal was simple: prove that incredible places become far more accessible when you have the right vehicle.

The Route

The expedition covered hundreds of miles across Utah and California, including stops at:

  • Capitol Reef National Park

  • Monument Valley

  • Kanab

  • Sand Hollow State Park

  • Joshua Tree National Park

  • Alabama Hills & Movie Road

  • Big Sur

  • Santa Cruz

  • Pismo Beach

  • San Diego

Every location offered a different challenge—from desert trails and gravel roads to mountain passes and coastal highways—creating the perfect opportunity to put the Outback Wilderness through real-world conditions.

Why the Outback Wilderness?

Many of the locations we filmed aren't reached by simply pulling off the highway.

Several required driving long stretches of dirt roads, uneven terrain, rocky access routes, and remote backroads that would have been difficult—or impossible—for a standard passenger vehicle.

The Outback Wilderness handled every environment with confidence. Its increased ground clearance, off-road capability, and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive allowed us to reach viewpoints, campsites, and filming locations that would have otherwise remained out of reach.

Instead of worrying about the road ahead, we were able to focus on creating.

Sharing the Journey

Along the way, we also participated in Mark Miller Subaru's Suba Blue adventure campaign. At each destination, we scanned QR codes and checked in with the Suba Blue mascot, documenting our route and sharing the journey as we explored Utah and California.

It added an interactive layer to the expedition, allowing followers to experience the adventure in real time while reinforcing the spirit of exploration behind the campaign.

The Result

This expedition wasn't about pushing a vehicle to its limits.

It was about demonstrating how capable transportation removes barriers between people and unforgettable experiences.

From the red rock landscapes of Utah to California's rugged coastline, the Subaru Outback Wilderness became more than transportation—it became part of the story, allowing our team to reach places that inspired the imagery we set out to create.

The project delivered an authentic visual narrative for Mark Miller Subaru, highlighting not only the beauty of the American West, but also the confidence and freedom that come with driving a vehicle built for exploration.
